Bharat Electronics Limited Forms New JV With French MNC Thales

Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), a state-owned Indian company and Thales, a French group, have entered a deal to form a joint venture in India. The JV is named BEL-Thales Systems Limited and they will design, develop and manufacture radar systems for defence and civilian applications..

In a statement, issued by BEL to the Bombay Stock Exchange on 3 September, it has been announced that BEL-Thales Systems Limited has been incorporated in late August. This JV will support India's purchase of the Dassault Rafale. It was selected to meet the requirement of the medium multi-role combat aircraft (MMRCA) in January 2012.

In a move to tackle counterfeit and sub-standard products, the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (Deity) has initiated a surveillance programme of certain notified products to ensure quality control.

Keeping pace with the growing consumption of electronic products, the Indian ICT (information and communication technology) industry is also gradually increasing. By 2020, India is expected to consume USD 320 billion worth of ICT products annually, reports media.

Immense business, trade and investment opportunities exist between India and Taiwan in hardware, semiconductors and microchip manufacturing, industry associations of both the countries said Monday.

"There is huge potential for building up on trade and investment between India and Taiwan in many sectors. Trade has been growing and further boost to Taiwanese investments into India is expected," said Chung Kwang Tien, representative of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Center in India (the Center operates like a diplomatic mission here).

With the demand for electronics set to reach $400 billion by 2020, the Andhra Pradesh government has unveiled a comprehensive electronics policy for capturing a major chunk of this growing market.

As per GO MS No 16 released on September 9, which outlines the new electronics policy, the state government has revealed its intent to set up 20 electronics manufacturing clusters (EMCs) and is planning to make all out efforts to attract investments to the tune of Rs 30,000 crore during the next five years.

Giving impetus to electronics manufacturing, the Government of Andhra Pradesh (AP) Tuesday unveiled a new Electronics Policy 2014-2020, which aims at attracting Rs 30,000 crore ($5 billion) investment besides employment creation of 0.4 million by 2020.

The policy, which supersedes the AP Electronics Hardware Policy 2012-17, will develop 20 electronics manufacturing clusters (EMCs) across the State in six years.

In an endeavour to promote IoT (Internet of Things) startups, the Indian Electronics & Semiconductor Association (IESA) and The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE) Bangalore chapter on Thursday, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU).

The partnership aims to provide entrepreneurs focussed on IoT, with testing facilities and mentors upto the initial funding stage.

Speaking on the significance of the agreement, President of IESA M N Vidyashankar said, “Initially we will select 30-50 start-ups under our ‘Entrepreneur Acceleration Program’ , mainly in energy, logistics and public health sector. End-use and exported devices require to be tested extensively. Most start-ups are unable to do early stage usability and reliability testing because these tests are expensive. The tie-up endeavours to provide entrepreneurs assistance to ensure that early testing is done efficiently.”

The India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA) on Thursday signed an agreement with Taipei Computer Association (TCA) to promote electronic system design and manufacturing (ESDM) industry cooperation between India and Taiwan, a statement said here. IESA is a trade body representing the Indian ESDM industry.

The agreement is part of the collaboration with TCA under which IESA will extend support to promote investments for India and set-up of the design and manufacturing ecosystem in the country, also helping the Taiwan-based companies to partner with the Indian ecosystem.
