More domain-specific incubation facilities planned

The Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) is looking at revising its incubation programme and plans to have more domain-specific facilities.

With the Centre announcing the setting up of Rs. 10,000-crore fund for start-ups and the Digital India initiative, the STPI is looking at revising its incubation programme, its director-general Omkar Rai told reporters here on Thursday.

There would be more idea-based, IT, ITES and electronic system design and manufacturing units, he said.

ISRO Mulls Developing Higher Capability Communication Satellites

ISRO is planning to develop communication satellites in higher frequency bands and power and data handling capacity in the range of 100 Gigabits per second to meet the growing demands of broadband Internet and rural telecom connectivity, ISRO chairman K Radhakrishnan said today. Radhakrishnan also said the premier space research organisation is looking for suitable foreign partners to acquire the technology and upgrade ISRO's current satellite platforms to meet the future demands.

Prantij to house state's 1st semiconductor wafer unit

Gujarat is set to get its first semiconductor wafer fabrication manufacturing facility by late 2017 in Prantij of Sabarkantha district.

To be set up by Hindustan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (HSMC), the facility will employ over 25,000 people including 4,000 direct employees.

Last year in September, the central government had approved setting up of two semiconductor wafer fabrication (FAB) manufacturing facilities in the country including one in Gujarat with an aim to provide a big boost to the electronics system design and manufacturing eco-system in the country.

Policy for Smart Cities Soon

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government may have just announced the development of 100 new smart cities in its first budget last month, but the Gujarat government has already started preparing a new policy framework and roadmap for developing existing cities into smart cities. It has planned a major brainstorming seminar in October when national and international experts will participate. The Gujarat government is also planning to develop five new cities in anticipation of a major new scheme for the development new smart cities.

Electronics Manufacturing Jobs to Multiply by 2020

Electronics manufacturing industry in India needs to grow at a much faster pace due to the ever-growing demand for consumer electronics, IT and telecom goods. This demand is expected to grow to US$ 400 billion by 2020, according to some estimates. In case manufacturing in India does not keep pace with the demand, country’s import bill for electronics will exceed the import bill for crude oil.

Amarpreet Singh, manager–manufacturing, Centum Electronics says, “To support this demand and reduce the currency outflow from India, Indian government has come up with a very detailed industrial policy that encourages manufacturing industry in India. Indian manufacturing industry is growing and so are the skill requirements to support electronics industry.”

DoT in favour of 10 per cent custom duty on telecom gear | Indian Television Dot Com

Following the uproar after the union budget proposed imposing 10 per cent import duty on telecom products not covered under Information Technology Agreement (ITA) 1 of WTO to boost domestic production of telecom products, media reports suggest that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) wants the Finance Ministry to retain the 10 per cent customs duty on specified telecom products as proposed in the budget.

According to a report in Economic Times, a letter written by the DoT to the revenue secretary said, “Imposition of customs duty on specified telecom products will create a level playing field for domestic manufacturers who suffer severe disability due to poor infrastructure and inverted duty."

Samsung's India head has come down hard on research agencies claiming that the Korean major has lost its No 1 position in the handset market, saying the reports were driven by 'business motive', although he conceded the pace of growth for the electronics company had slowed.

BD Park, president & chief executive for south-west Asia, told ET in an exclusive interaction that Samsung still holds the lead in India with a share of almost half the market.

India to Be Self-Reliant In Defense Manufacturing: PM Narendra Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday said that the government is committed to make India self-reliant in defence manufacturing. Modi, who is on a day-long visit to the Ladakh region, addressed soldiers here. The prime minister spoke of the provisions made in the union budget towards the modernization and welfare of the armed forces, including 'One Rank One Pension'. He also promised that the National War Memorial would be built and would inspire future generations of India.

MTN board approves $1 billion for India expansion: report

MTN’s board has approved $1 billion (R10.65 billion) for expansion into India, with the group reportedly in talks with three firms based in the Asian country.

CNBC TV18 reported that MTN executives are currently in India to explore opportunities with multiple players including Tata Group, Videocon Group and Aircel.

The channel reported that MTN’s board has approved a $1 billion expenditure in India.

Odisha plans 50k acre land bank for industries

With land acquisition posing a major hurdle in rapid industrialisation, plans are afoot to develop a land bank of at least 50,000 acres as a key initiative for development of industrial infrastructure in Odisha.

The Industries department along with the Industrial Development Corporation Limited (IDCO) and Industrial Promotion and Investment Corporation of Odisha Limited (IPICOL) has been directed to carry forward the initiatives in a time bound manner, an official said today.

The Indian Patent Office granted a total of 506 patents and published 2385 patent applications in the month of July, 2014.

GM Global Technologies were on the top of the Grantee list with 17 patents to their name. With a total of 11 patents, Qualcomm Incorporated followed GM Global at a close second. Koninklijke Philips Electronics, Hewlett-Packard Development Company and Samsung R&D Institute, India also made it to the Grantee list.

Bangalore to Get Free WiFi Facility in 6 Months

The government of Karnataka is planning to give a gift of free Wi-Fi to all the internet users in Bangalore. Earlier this year, Bangalore became the first city in India to launch free public WiFi at various locations in the city.

According to a report of eGov, S R Patil Minister for Information Technology, Biotechnology and Science and Technology, “Bangalore became the first city in India to launch free public WiFi, earlier this year. We are adding additional locations and we are planning to provide free WiFI facility in entire Bangalore and in all the district towns.’
