Taiwan Hardware Park Coming Up Near Bengaluru

Reportedly, the first country-specific industrial hub will be rolling out in Bengaluru soon. The Taiwan Hardware Park will emerge in a land near Devanahalli, on the outskirts of Bengaluru, which has been allotted by the state government.

So far a software hub, Bengaluru is now fast catching up on the hardware front too. With Taiwan hardware park, the city take a big leap in that sector.

In the coming four to five weeks, the work on the buildings and roads will start for Bengaluru’s Taiwan Hardware Park, which is expected to complete in two years. Reportedly, the Taiwanese will be importing their equipment and will commence production once the buildings are in place.

Infotech Enterprises sets up branch office in South Africa

Infotech Enterprises has set up a branch office in South Africa. On standalone basis, the company has reported 86.70% rise in its net profit at Rs 65.85 crore for the second quarter ended September 30, 2013 as compared to Rs 35.27 crore for the same quarter in the previous year. Total income of the company has increased by 21.15% at Rs 315.07 crore for quarter under review as compared to Rs 260.06 crore for the quarter ended September 30, 2012.

MediaTek forecast to become world's 16th largest IC supplier

MediaTek Inc., one of Taiwan's leading integrated circuit (IC) designers, is forecast to emerge as the world's 16th largest semiconductor supplier by the end of this year, according to a preliminary ranking released by IC Insights. It is the first time that the fabless Taiwanese IC designer is entering the world's top 20 semiconductor suppliers list, which is compiled by the U.S.-based market research firm. MediaTek ranked 22nd on IC Insights' 2012 list of major global semiconductor suppliers. Thanks to extremely strong demand for its devices in the thriving mid-range and low-end smartphone business in China and other Asia-Pacific countries, MediaTek's processor shipments are expected to exceed 200 million units this year, almost double the 108 million units it shipped in 2012, IC Insights said in its preliminary report. The report forecast MediaTek's 2013 annual sales at an estimated US$4.515 billion, up by an annual 34 percent.

Researchers Find Way to Increase Range of Wireless Frequencies in Smartphones

Researchers have found a new way to tune the radio frequency in smartphones and other wireless devices that promises to reduce costs and improve performance of semiconductors used in defense, satellite and commercial communications. Semiconductor Research Corp. (SRC) and Northeastern University in Boston presented the research findings at the 58th Magnetism and Magnetic Materials Conference in Denver this week.

Minister wants KEONICS to make solar panels, tablets

Almost two decades after stopping manufacture of TVs and wireless equipment, the Karnataka State Electronics Development Corporation Limited (KEONICS), the State-owned enterprise, is dreaming big to foray into manufacture of solar panels, tablets, smartphones and computers in a big way.

This is not all. IT, BT and Science and Technology Minister S R Patil wants KEONICS to expand its services to mid-level IT education too.

Taiwan Semiconductor appointed two co-CEOs

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co, the world's biggest contract microchip maker, on Tuesday appointed two senior executives to share the duties of president and chief executive officer.

Directors approved the appointment of Mark Liu and C.C. Wei, who will jointly fill both posts, the company said in a statement.

"The Presidents and the Co-Chief Executive Officers shall report to and perform such duties as designated by the Chairman of the Board," it said.

Apple may hire GlobalFoundries to make iPhone, iPad chips

Apple is expected to hire chip manufacturer GlobalFoundries to make some of the chips used in its iPhones and iPads.

GlobalFoundries could soon begin manufacturing some of Apple's chips at its Fab 8 factory in Malta, NY, CNET reports.

Presently, Samsung makes the majority of chips for Apple's mobile devices, which includes Apple's powerful new A7 chip that is used in the iPhone 5S, the report added.

Need to boost innovation, investment in electronics: Department of Electronics and Information Technology

India needs to boost innovation and investment in the electronics sector to reach production target of $400 billion by 2020, a top official from the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DEITY) said today.

"We need to increase innovation and investments in the electronics sector so as to achieve the production target of USD 400 billion by 2020," DEITY Secretary J Satyanarayana said at an event here.

National Policy on Universal Electronic Accessibility unveiled

The Union Cabinet has approved the National Policy on Universal Electronic Accessibility to provide electronics and Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to people from all strata of society including differently abled people, according to a press release issued by the government.

The policy will facilitate equal and unhindered access to electronics and ICTs products and services by differently abled persons (both physically and mentally challenged) and to facilitate local language support for the same. This shall be achieved through universal access to electronics and ICT products and services to synchronise with barrier free environment and preferably usable without adaptation. Differently abled persons all over the country will benefit from this policy, said the release.

Imec announced today an extended cooperation agreement to become a TSMC Value Chain Aggregator (VCA) in India. Under the terms of the agreement, imec can offer full mask tape out and wafer production to Indian fabless semiconductor companies, system and design houses.
