With India's electronics import bill set to become larger than its oil bill, the country needs to invest in an electronics manufacturing base to meet the huge demand for electronic gadgets, according to V. Raja, Managing Director, TE Connectivity India.

According to a report by Frost and Sullivan India - Electronics and Semiconductor Association, the demand for about 65 per cent of electronic products in India is met by imports. The report adds that these imports are likely to grow from $28 billion in 2011 to $42 billion in 2015, in the absence of intervention by the government..

Plan to install 2,000 cell towers to improve rural telephony

Union Minister of State for Information Technology & Communication Killi Kruparani on Friday said the Centre was putting together a plan to install 2,000 cell towers at a cost of Rs. 3,000 crore with a view to improving telephony in the rural areas.

Bosch Automotive Electronics has been the first company to submit an application under the Modified Special Incentive Package Scheme (M-SIPS), entailing an investment of about Rs 5.5 billion in automotive electronics by expanding its facilities in Bengaluru. Under M-SIPS, the government will provide subsidy for investments in capital expenditure with a limit of 20 per cent for investments in special economic zones (SEZ) and 25 per cent in non-SEZs.

The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), representing U.S. leadership in semiconductor manufacturing and design, today announced that worldwide sales of semiconductors reached $23.25 billion for the month of February 2013, an increase of 1.4 percent from February 2012 when sales were $22.93 billion. Global sales from February 2013 were 3.8 percent lower than the January 2013 total of $24.17 billion, reflecting seasonal trends, but year-to-date sales through February 2013 were 2 percent higher than at the same point last year. All monthly sales numbers represent a three-month moving average.

The electronic design automation (EDA) industry revenue increased 4.6 per cent for Q4 2012 to Rs.9,565.05 crore ($1779.1 million), compared to Rs.9,140.32 crore ($1700.1 million) in Q4 2011, according to the EDA Consortium report.

Gartner: Worldwide semiconductor revenue declined 2.6 percent in 2012

Total worldwide semiconductor revenue reached $299.9 billion in 2012, down 2.6 percent from 2011, according to Gartner. With the overall semiconductor market decline, the number of vendors that declined among the top 25 outnumbered those that grew.

Gartner said the top 25 semiconductor vendors' revenue declined slightly faster, at 2.8 percent, than the industry as a whole and accounted for almost the same portion of the industry's total revenue — 68.9 percent in 2012, compared with 69.0 percent in 2011.

Ashok Chandak, Senior Director - Global Sales and Marketing NXP Semiconductors India will be the new Vice Chairman and Vivek Tyagi, Country Sales Director, Freescale Semiconductor will continue as Treasurer for this tenure as well.
