India needs to develop strong electronics base: PM

India must strengthen its local manufacturing in electronics and communications as the country's import in these segments are set to outdo its petroleum imports by the end of the decade, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Thursday.

"India needs to develop a strong domestic manufacturing base in electronics and telecommunications. It is estimated that by 2020, India will be importing electronic products worth about $300 billion, which will be more than the value of our oil imports," Singh said while inaugurating the annual India Telecom summit.

Second Infosys campus in Odisha to be operational by April 2014

The second campus of IT major Infosys in Odisha will be operational by April 2014 at Info Valley (Infocity-II), which is being developed by the Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (Idco), on the outskirt of Bhubaneswar.

He stated that another 180 acres of land is being developed as Electronic System Designing and Manufacturing (ESDM) cluster by Idco jointly with Odisha Computer Application Centre.Meanwhile, Singapore based Jurong Consultancy Pte. is engaged to prepare the master plan of the Info Valley.

Anxious wait for 7,000 employees: Will Nokia’s factory be allowed to get transferred to Microsoft?

Will Nokia's India mobilephone-making factory, mired in a tax dispute, be allowed to get transferred to Microsoft, the Finnish company's global acquirer?

The answer will be known Thursday, the deadline for the transfer. Nokia and Microsoft will await interestedly the outcome of the Delhi High Court proceedings, which is likely to rule on the issue.

Drop clauses that restrict local gear companies: DoT to BSNL

The telecom department has asked Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) to drop restrictive clauses that could hinder procurement of network gear from Indian suppliers for the Rs 13,000-crore communications network it is building for the armed forces.
The DoT's diktat to BSNL follows complaints by United Telecoms Ltd and Indian Electronics & Semiconductor Association about "non-adherence to PMA policy in BSNL's tenders" linked to the armed forces communication venture, internally known as the NFS project.
