Indian hardware-makers are unable to participate in a large defence telecommunications project worth 13,000 crore as eligibility rules stack the deck heavily in favour of multinational network gear-makers.

The project that has attracted the ire of Indian industry lobbies is the one to build a nationwide, secure communication network for the country's armed forces. The Department of Telecommunications had given the responsibility for the project to state-run mobile operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd.

Avago Technologies Ltd on Monday said it would buy LSI Corp for $6.6 billion in one of the semiconductor industry's largest deals this year as it turns to the fast-growing storage chip market to counter volatility in its main wireless business.Rapid growth in cloud storage is boosting sales of higher-margin products for storage drive makers such as Seagate Technology Plc, LSI's biggest customer last year.

Government has exempted the private sector from the revised version of Preferential Market Access policy (PMA), which calls for domestic sourcing of technology products that can have security implications. "The Cabinet approved revised PMA in first week of December. The only change is that it will not apply on private sector. The Ministry of Communications and IT will notify it soon," a government source told PTI.

Industry experts feel the revised policy can jeopardise investments into the domestic sector.

"It may be noted here that an investment pipeline has already been created under the M-SIPS policy, and such policy shifts can jeopardise further investments into the sector," Indian Electronic & Semiconductor Association President PVG Menon said.

Consumer Electronics and Appliances Manufacturers’ Association (CEAMA) has concluded their 34th Annual Function. Additionally, CEAMA announced that Anirudh Dhoot has been re-elected as President of CEAMA for this third consecutive year. The event also witnessed the unveiling of a report on “Opportunities and Challenges in Consumer Electronics and Home Appliances” by Arthur D little.

According to the report, consumer durable segment is the fastest-growing sector in India. This sector attracted significant investments even during global recession. During FY03-FY13, the industry expanded at a healthy CAGR of 13%. Few pointers were noted down in the report for the improvement and betterment of the industry.

Intel to buy Mindspeed’s wireless infrastructure business

Chip vendor Intel has signed a deal to buy Mindspeed Technologies’ wireless infrastructure business.

The move follows the agreement to merge Mindspeed Technologies with M/A-COM Technology Solutions Holdings.

The transaction is expected to close in February 2014 and is subject to satisfaction of various closing conditions, said Intel. Intel Communications and Storage Infrastructure Group vice president and general manager Rose Schooler said in a blog post that through this acquisition, Intel will gain a wireless infrastructure team with deep experience in delivering signal processing-related technologies and IP for base stations.

The Haryana Government has decided to establish various clusters in partnership with industry and financial support from the Government of India. The step is taken so as to provide institutional support for the MSME sector.

Randeep Singh, Haryana's Industries and Commerce Minister, in an interview with Business Standard said, ''We have identified 31 clusters across various sectors, like textiles, stainless steel, footwear, print and packaging, pharma, agricultural implements, leather, engineering, scientific instruments, etc. Common Facility Centres for five clusters have been sanctioned by GoI and 'in principle' approval of GoI has been received for two clusters. The foundation stones for these were laid at Saha, Ambala and Rohtak by the Union MSME minister and the chief minister on October 23. Detailed project reports and diagnostic reports are under preparation for the rest.''
