Decision soon on investor for semiconductor fab unit

The much-delayed decision on selecting the foreign investor for building the country’s first semiconductor wafer fabrication unit is ‘likely to be announced soon.’

The government, which had floated expressions of interest from investors and technology service providers in 2011, was ‘carefully considering’ the proposals before taking a final decision, Ajay Kumar, Joint Secretary in the Department of Electronics and Information Technology, told The Hindu on the sidelines of an event, organised by Electronic Industries Association of India, here on Friday. The establishment of a fab unit would result in the development of an ecosystem that would be conducive for manufacturing electronic components indigenously, he said.

Communications Minister Kapil Sibal Friday said he is struggling to convince various departments on several issues including India's ambitious Rs 25,000 crore project for setting up an electronic chips manufacturing plant.

Some departments want to have a tender process for setting up semiconductor fab which is not practical in case of high-tech projects, especially those being set up for strategic reason, he said.

Union Minister for Communications & IT and Law & Justice Mr. Kapil Sibal said today that a combination of liberal M&A and FDI policies will facilitate the required investments, and spur renewed activity in the telecommunication sector.

Speaking at the CII National Telecom Summit 2013, organized in partnership with Department of Telecommunications, the minister remarked that “industry and government need to empower the common man through affordable services, data and devices”. He also stressed on the urgent need to establish an indigenous fab facility in the country.

LED oversupply likely to continue as suppliers add production capacity

Despite a major surplus in the light-emitting diode (LED) market, top suppliers are increasing their capital spending and production because of government incentives and in order to cash in on an expected boom in the lighting business.

Global shipments of metal organic chemical vapor-deposition (MOCVD) equipment-tools that are essential for LED manufacturing-are expected to rise by 17 percent in 2013, according to Alice Tao, senior analyst, LEDs and lighting for IHS.This will be the first annual growth for the MOCVD market since 2011, and will represent a major turnaround from the 70 percent plunge of 2012.

IC Insights Reveals Big Changes to 1H13 Top 20 Semiconductor Supplier Ranking

Later this month, IC Insights' August Update to the 2013 McClean Report will show a ranking of the top 25 semiconductor suppliers in 1H13. A preview of the top 20 companies is listed in Figure 1. The top 20 worldwide semiconductor (IC and O S D - optoelectronic, discrete, and sensor) sales leaders for 1H13 include eight suppliers headquartered in the U.S., four in Japan, three in Europe, three in Taiwan, and two in South Korea.

Spansion completes acquisition of Fujitsu’s microcontroller and analog business

Spansion Inc., a provider of Flash memory-based embedded systems solutions, today announced that it has closed the acquisition of the microcontroller and analog business of Fujitsu Semiconductor Limited. Under the terms of the agreement, Spansion will pay approximately $110 million, plus approximately $38 million for inventory. The net impact is expected to be accretive for Spansion in 2013.

"We are very excited about the new products and business opportunities we can create with this acquisition," said John Kispert, president and CEO of Spansion. "We will expand our embedded market leadership and support our customer base with a broader product line including Flash memory, microcontrollers, analog, mixed signal and system-on-chip solutions that will shape the future of electronics."

USA - Research and Markets has announced the addition of the "Global Semiconductor Industry 2012-2017: Trend, Profit, and Forecast Analysis" report to their offering.

Global macroeconomic developments and technological advances, personal computers, and memory markets are expected to drive demand over the forecast period.

The global semiconductor industry is a fragmented market. The Asia Pacific (APAC) region dominates this market and represents approximately three-fourths of the global market. Some of the major players include Intel Corporation, Samsung Electronics, Taiwan Semiconductor, Texas Instruments, and Toshiba Corporation. The combination of factors such as continuing transfer of worldwide electronic equipment production to China and the above-average semiconductor content of that equipment influences market dynamics tremendously.

EDA industry revenue increases 8.1pc for Q1 2013

The EDA Consortium (EDAC) Market Statistics Service (MSS) announced that the Electronic Design Automation (EDA) industry revenue increased 8.1 percent for Q1 2013 to $1,668.5 million, compared to $1,544.2 million in Q1 2012.

Sequential EDA revenue for Q1 2013 decreased 6.2 percent compared to Q4 2012, while the four-quarters moving average, which compares the most recent four quarters to the prior four quarters, increased by 7 percent. The total revenue for the most recent four quarters (Q2 2012 through Q1 2013) was $6,660.5 million.

New ICT policy offers subsidy sops for IT parks

To encourage the investors to set up IT parks in Odisha, the proposed ICT (Information Communication Technology) policy in the state promises entry tax waiver on machines, equipment, capital goods and construction material procured for implementation of infrastructure projects.

The ICT policy mandates that 60 per cent of the built up area will be used for IT/ITes (information technology enabled services) / Electronic System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) purposes and the balance to be used for non-processing area like recreation facilities, shops and retail, banks, crèches, serviced apartments and other support services.

Global giants look to invest Rs 50,000 crore in chip-making in India

India appears set to get its first chip-making facility with at least two global players - IBM and STMicroelectronics - in advanced stages of talks with the government for an investment of over Rs 50,000 crore.

Both STMicroelectronics, Europe's largest chipmaker semiconductor player, and the consortium comprising IBM have indicated that they would initially invest over Rs 25,000 crore each, at least two government officers familiar with the development told TOI. Through the investment the government is hoping to not just get valuable foreign exchange but also go for import substitution.

Semiconductor IP revenue jumps 20.2% in Q1

The electronic design automation (EDA) industry revenue increased 8.1 per cent for the first quarter of 2013 to reach Rs.9,991.02 crore ($1668.5 million), compared to Rs.9,246.71 crore ($1544.2 million) in first quarter of 2012, according to the statistics revealed by the EDA Consortium.

Sequential EDA revenue for Q1 2013 decreased 6.2 per cent compared to Q4 2012, while the four-quarters moving average, which compares the most recent four quarters to the prior four quarters, increased by 7 per cent. The total revenue for the most recent four quarters (Q2 2012 through Q1 2013) was Rs.39,883.23 crore ($6660.5 million).
