I was attending an event about electronics industry in India a few days back. The presenter was talking about how the current Rs.3.40 lakh crore ($65 billion )+ electronics market in India (a very large part of which is being serviced through imports) is going to explode to Rs.20.94 lakh crore ($400 billion) by 2020 and how Government of India is looking to address this demand by planning a policy, working along with trade bodies such as India Electronics & Semiconductor Association (IESA) and other relevant policy makers.

A common national test for admission to engineering courses across the country will be held from 2013. A meeting of the joint councils of Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and other central educational institutions approved the conduct of a common admission examination with weightage to performance in the Class XII Board examinations.

Xilinx: 3-D Chip a Route to More Complex Semiconductors

In case you missed it, programmable chip maker Xilinx (XLNX) this morning announced an interesting advance in chip making. The company has combined two different types of silicon into one part in what it is calling a 3-D “field-programmable gate array” (FPGA), with the 3-D part deriving from the fact that two chips are “stacked” inside the package, the container that usually houses just one semiconductor.
