Dreamchip Electronics Announces Plan For India's Own Processor Based Tablet SoC

In perhaps a first for any Indian company so far, Dreamchip Electronics Private Limited, a fabless semiconductor company founded in 2012 has announced plans for launching SoCs for tablet computers. The SoCs come in 3 different variants named Siddhi, Vani and Sandesh. Each of these has been specified and optimized for a distinct tablet application. Dreamchip will use a proprietary multi-core 32-bit RISC and DSP processor architecture and a unique optimized direct connect architecture for powering these SoCs.

Fujitsu, Panasonic may merge chip units

India needs a broad enterprise M2M strategy

Lack of standardization and interoperability are deterring the growth and development of machine to machine (M2M) market in India. However, a recent report by analyst firm Frost & Sullivan estimates that innovation and a broad enterprise M2M strategy will stimulate revenue growth of 22.3 percent by 2017 with greater needs evolving from customers.
Despite significant growth opportunities in connected devices, experts at the recent Convergence India conference believe that the issue with lack of standardization must be addressed first. Ashok Chandak, senior director of global sales and marketing at NXP Semiconductors India states the M2M market in India extremely fragmented and there has to be interoperability at the hardware and software level for easier upgrades in the future.

Most of mobile apps to be hybrid by 2016: Gartner

Gartner's 2013 Mobile and Wireless Predictions expect that more than 50 percent of mobile apps installed by 2016 will become hybrid.

Semiconductor Industry Posts Near-Record Sales Total in 2012

The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), representing U.S. leadership in semiconductor manufacturing and design, today announced that worldwide semiconductor sales for 2012 reached $291.6 billion, the industry's third-highest yearly total ever but a decrease of 2.7 percent from the record total of $299.5 billion set in 2011. Total sales for the year narrowly beat expectations from the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organization's industry forecast. Global sales for the month of December 2012 hit $24.7 billion, a decline of 3 percent from the previous month when sales were $25.5 billion. Fourth quarter sales of $74.2 billion were 3.8 percent higher than the total of $71.5 billion from the fourth quarter of 2011. All monthly sales numbers represent a three-month moving average.
