DRDO research cenre in IIT-M

Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has set up a research and innovation centre at Indian Institute of Technoogy-Madras (IIT-M) Research Park to pursue directed research. Scientific advisor to defence minister V K Saraswat inaugurated the centre today.

India took a major initiative in the 11th Plan to start and strengthen many activities in nanoelectronics, including creation and support of several Centres of Excellence in Nanoelectronics and a nation wide Indian Nanoelectronics Users’ Programme. In the 12th plan it is proposed to scale it up multi-fold through the innovation council, with emphasis on nanoelectronics to cater to India’s expanding requirements in consumer, societal, security, strategic, energy and agricultural areas, and thereby gain technology leadership and economic maturity with more than 10% GDP growth target. With this objective , Department of Electronics and Information Technology, MCIT has formed a sectoral innovation council in order to promote innovation in the area of Nanoelectronics.

Global semicon revenues grow

Semiconductor revenues worldwide will see nominal growth this year at less than 1 percent reaching $304 billion according to the year-end 2012 update of research firm IDC.
IDC also forecasts that semiconductor revenues will improve by 4.9 percent to $319 billion in 2013 and log a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.1 percent from 2011-2016, reaching $368 billion in 2016.

Govt to finalise partner for Rs 25K crore chip making project

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co will soon start making microchips for Apple as the US tech giant reduces manufacturing contracts with its South Korean rival Samsung, reports said Wednesday.
The Taiwanese company has been contracted to manufacture the A6X chip, which drives Apple's 4th generation iPad, with trial production set for the first quarter of this year, Taiwan's Commercial Times reported.
