Shri K.R. Gururaja Rao hails from Mysore. He had his school education at Shimoga, Bhadravati, Chikmagalur, K.R. Nagar and Mysore. He continued his further studies at Yuvaraja’s College and National Institute of Engineering, Mysore. He studied MBA at University of Delhi. As a recognition of his long time contribution in the Electronics field in the country, he has been awarded the Honorary Fellowship from the Institute of Electronics & Telecommunication Engineers.

After a very short stint at Neyveli Lignite Corporation and Mysore State Electricity Board, he joined Bharat Electronics Limited, a Ministry of Defense Undertaking at Bangalore and subsequently moved to start a new unit of Bharat Electronics Limited at Ghaziabad, U.P. to meet the requirement of Indian Air-force.

He moved to Baroda, Gujarat in May 1977 as a Senior Member of a core team of six engineers to start Gujarat Communications & Electronics Ltd., better known as GCEL, a Public Sector undertaking of Government of Gujarat from green field stage. This organization grew very fast in the field of manufacture of high grade professional electronics equipments, supplying products to Indian Railways, Dept. of Telecommunication, Doordarshan, All India Radio and Defense Services. Subsequent to the success of the Baroda unit, the State Government asked GCEL to start a second unit at Gandhinagar.
Shri Gururaja Rao moved to Gandhinagar in 1985 as an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) and started a new manufacturing unit to manufacture electronic push button telephones in collaboration with Siemens, Germany and Telephone Exchanges with C-DOT technology. He moved back to Baroda to look after the corporate affairs as Executive Director. He retired in 1997. His unique achievement was to establish outsourcing of manufacture of parts and sub-assemblies to small scale industries thereby reducing the over-heads in the operation of the organization. Thus his involvement in starting many new units has resulted in generation of employment to more than 2000 young professionals of which he is very proud.

He has extensively traveled around the world for his official work. He has been member of Government of India delegation to Europe & USA. He continued his active professional work as a Consultant in Production Technology and ISO Quality Management at Baroda. He moved to Bangalore with an intention to settle down in 2004. He was called back by Government of Gujarat in 2010 to head Gujarat Informatics Limited (GIL) as its Chairman & Managing Director. He is playing a major role in the e-Governance initiatives of the State Government.
