Lip-Bu Tan
CEO, Cadence & Chairman Walden International
 
Lip-Bu Tan has served as President and CEO of Cadence Design Systems, Inc. since January 2009 and has been a member of the Cadence Board of Directors since February 2004. Over the past few years, Lip-Bu has led a resurgence in the Cadence business, repositioning the company as a technology leader through close collaboration with customers and ecosystem partners.

He is also the founder and Chairman of Walden International, a leading venture capital firm managing over $2 billion. In 1985, he introduced and pioneered the U.S. venture capital concept in Asia. Lip-Bu invests primarily in industries relating to semiconductors and components, alternative energy, and digital media. Lip-Bu is one of largest and most influential global VC investors in the fabless semiconductor industry and is an advocate and lead venture capital investor for many fabless semiconductor startups. During his tenure at Walden, Lip-Bu made investments in Advanced Micro-Fabrication Equipment Corporation; Ambarella, Inc., Aptina Imaging, Inc., Beceem Communications, Inphi Corporation, EnVerv, Inc., Silicon Mitus, Telegent Systems, Tilera Corporation, Premisys Communication, S3, Centillium (NASDAQ: CTLM), Endwave (NASDAQ: ENWV), Integrated Silicon Solutions Inc., Leadis Technology, Inc., Network Peripheral, and Unisem.

Lip-Bu is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Global Semiconductor Alliance (GSA) and sits on the GSA VC advisory council. In addition to his activities in the fabless semiconductor community, Lip-Bu also is deeply engaged with semiconductor ecosystem companies like foundries and IP providers. He works closely with the financial community including several leading private equity firms and with the governments of China and other countries to advance the local semiconductor industries.

In addition to the Board of Cadence, Lip-Bu currently serves on the Boards of Ambarella Inc., Inphi Corporation, SINA, and Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. He previously served on the Boards of Flextronics International and MindTree Ltd. He also serves on the Board of Trustees and the School of Engineering Deanís Council at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), the School of Engineering Deanís Advisory Board at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and the College of Engineering Advisory Board at University of California Berkeley. He also served as a Trustee of Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore from 2006 to 2011, and a member of the Regent College Board of Governors from 2006 to 2012.

Prior to Walden, Lip-Bu was Vice President at Chappell & Co.; he also held management positions at EDS Nuclear and ECHO Energy. Tan received an M.S. in nuclear engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an MBA from the University of San Francisco, and a B.S. from Nanyang University in Singapore.
